Amirsoheil Honarbari is a postdoctoral researcher at the Electronic Design Laboratory (EDL) of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT). He currently works on SMARTHEAL, a project funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) that is developing a smart magnetic anastomosis implant for colorectal surgery. Equipped with micro-sensors and wireless electronics, the implant supports tissue healing and monitors the surgical site to detect early signs of complications such as anastomotic leaks. At IIT, he contributes to the design of the implant’s embedded electronics.
Previously, he worked on the PNRR RAISE project (Robotics and AI for Socio-economic Empowerment, CUP J33C22001220001), which aims to develop and bring to market robotic and AI-based solutions that respond to real production and social needs. Within RAISE, he contributed to RAISE Walker, an assistive navigation system combining a mobile app and a dedicated keyboard for visually impaired people, presented at IEEE ICCE-Berlin 2025 and published in IEEE Access in 2026.
He received his PhD in Bioengineering and Robotics from IIT and the University of Genoa in 2024, under the supervision of Dr. Athanassia Athanassiou and Dr. Pietro Cataldi (Smart Materials Group), with advice from Dr. Marco Crepaldi (EDL). He holds a B.Sc. (2014) and an M.Sc. (2018) in Power Electronics Engineering from Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran, where he also worked as a lecturer and as a researcher in the Power Electronics Laboratory.
His research interests include hardware design, implantable and wireless electronics, flexible and sustainable electronics, biodegradable and recyclable circuit substrates, biopolymer-based composites for soft robotics, and assistive technologies.
